EXP Programs Provided a Lifeline for Eros
Over our 25 years, we have witnessed your generosity’s profound and lasting impact on our students. Students like Eros Monzones ’22—a young man whose life has been transformed by the opportunities your donation made possible.
Eros emigrated from the Philippines with his family in middle school, feeling lost and out of place. When he entered Carson High School, everything changed. Ms. Tammy Bird, then lead teacher of the Environmental Science Engineering & Technology Pathway, introduced Eros to EXP’s programs, encouraging him to embrace the opportunities offered.
For Eros, it was a lifeline.
As a sophomore, Eros attended GPS Your Future® career discovery day, and left with a new sense of purpose to “work harder and smarter.” He then participated in Industry Coaching and the Young Fellows Program. There, industry professionals and mentors helped him define his goals and build his confidence.
These experiences prepared him for the EXP Internship Program. After completing seven career-readiness workshops, he earned a paid internship with the Port of Los Angeles’ Financial Planning & Analyst Division, sparking his interest in business and setting him on a path he never imagined.
Today, Eros is pursuing a degree in Business Administration and Management at California State University, Long Beach. He’s back at the Port of Los Angeles as a student worker in the Community Relations Department, working alongside EXP alum Christine Pina ’05.
Eros recently shared with us, “I wouldn’t be where I am without the support, guidance, and education provided by EXP.”
Eros’ story is one of many, showing the power of our collective commitment to empowering young people. Volunteers, mentors, educators, industry partners, and donors like you made this journey possible.
