More than 400 Students from EXP-Supported Schools Explored Careers at the US Coast Guard Base
On November 21, more than 400 high school students from 9 EXP-supported high schools explored career opportunities available at the US Coast Guard Base Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach. Students visited 10 demonstration stations from maritime safety and security and search and rescue to health clinic, the galley, and the USCG K-9 unit.
"We have everything from maritime enforcement to supply technicians, culinary specialists, and many different other jobs that support the community and our many missions," said Petty officer Mark Barney, public information officer for the USCG. "We hope the students get exposure to our missions and learn about how we serve the local community of Los Angeles."
In its 14th year, the EXP Day of Discovery is one of the most successful outreach events in the Port of Los Angeles to introduce students to Coast Guard career opportunities. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach works closely with EXP as board members, industry coaches, guest speakers, and internship hosts. The Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach and EXP were recognized by the Coast Guard’s Partnership in Education (PIE) program as the best collaborative partnership across the service for the 2016-2017 year. In that same year, 8,600 Coast Guard members and employees from 190 units dedicated 90,000 hours to the mentorship and development of more than 100,000 students through the PIE program.
